AN ASIMOV FAN

1. Some people think that any robots you build
      will have to end up as killers and thugs,
   And anybody who tries to build one
      will end up like old Doc Frankenstein.
   Some folk will never want computers that walk
      and can talk and can fix their own bugs;
   They think that cybernetics only can mean
      the enslavement of all humankind.
        I know that robots can be friends to our race.
        I know a robot who wears a man's face.
           His name is R Daneel, but
   Some people think no computer will ever
      help humanity out of a fix;
   They think that entropy is going to cause
      the extinction of woman and man.
   Some people think that this old Universe
      has just a couple more million to go;
   I know that Multivac won't let cosmos die,
      because I am an Asimov fan!
        I am...an Asimov fan.  Oh, yes, I am.

2. Some people think there's another Dark Age
      coming up for the descendants of Earth.
   Some people say all ideas will be lost
      and nobody can keep them alive.
   Some folk say three hundred long centuries
      will have to pass before the Empire's rebirth,
   And they're afraid there'll be nobody left
      to see civilization revive.
        They've Seldon thought that their fears are absurd.
        They're stubborn as a Mule, these stories I've heard.
           They've no Foundation, but
   Some folk may hedge--at the Galaxy's edge
      they'd put a citadel of learning and light;
   Some folks would hide another one deep inside,
      at the center of the Galaxy's span.
   Some say one man and a thousand-year Plan
      won't be enough to start us over again;
   I can rely on a planet called Gaia,
      'cause I am an Asimov fan!
        I am...an Asimov fan.  Oh, yes, I am.


        And I can add five and three and get eight.
        Don't need a calculator to calculate.
           The feeling's powerful, and
   I'm not too far from thanking my Lucky Starrs
      that I could read his work when I was a kid,
   And there's enough to keep reading until
      I'm a Sensuous Dirty Old Man.
   Some fans deride all of Asimov's Guides:
      They'd rather read some cyberpunk or some Gor.
   I want to say, I'll miss you, Dr. A,
      because I am an Asimov fan!
